R-Cin is classified as a macrolide antibiotic and is mainly used alongside other medications to treat tuberculosis (TB). TB is a contagious respiratory illness that primarily affects the lungs but can also spread to areas such as the kidneys, brain, spine, and bone marrow. Additionally, it is effective against various other bacterial infections. However, R-Cin is ineffective against viral infections, including the common cold and flu. Tuberculosis-causing bacteria are highly infectious and transmit from person to person through tiny droplets released into the air from coughs or sneezes.
The active ingredient in R-Cin is 'Rifampicin', which functions by inactivating a specific bacterial protein enzyme (RNA-polymerase) and preventing bacterial cell death. R-Cin targets the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria responsible for TB (tuberculosis).
R-Cin should be administered 30 minutes before meals or 2 hours after meals on an empty stomach. Some common side effects may occur, including drowsiness, dizziness, headache, weakness, muscle pain, heartburn, diarrhea, gas, and a tingling or numb sensation. Generally, these side effects are mild and diminish over time. However, if any persist, it is crucial to contact your doctor promptly.
R-Cin may elevate liver enzymes such as ALT and could lead to jaundice with prolonged use. Therefore, regular liver function tests (LFT) are advisable during R-Cin treatment. It is recommended to maintain a one-hour gap between taking R-Cin and antacid medications. R-Cin is not advised for those who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Breastfeeding should also be avoided while on R-Cin, as it can be transmitted through breast milk. This medication may induce dizziness and vision issues; thus, it is best to refrain from driving or operating machinery that necessitates mental focus. Additionally, abstaining from alcohol is important while on R-Cin, as it may increase drowsiness, dizziness, and risk of liver damage.
